Rheem Heat Pump Error A004 indicates that the heating system switches to using elements because of a potential compressor issue.
To troubleshoot this problem, follow these step:
Ensure the fan is working while the compressor is running.
If the fan isn't operational, check continuity from the middle (ground) terminal to either outside terminal.
A reading of 120V or higher indicates the fan should be running and may need replacement. If not, consider replacing the control board though this is rare.
Make sure the filter screen is clean.
Inspect compressor and surrounding components for any signs of a refrigerant leak, such as oily residue.
If the compressor isn't working or there are signs of leakage, the unit may need to be replaced as we do not service sealed system parts.
